The Duvha power plant is a coal-fired power plant operated by the state-owned South African energy provider Eskom with an installed capacity of 3.6 GW in the Mpumalanga province . The power plant consists of six blocks of 600 MW each. The chimneys are 300 m high. In the vicinity of the power plant there is an opencast mine for coal extraction.
In 1993, a flue gas cleaning system for dedusting was installed in the existing system at the Duvha power plant , initially in three of the six blocks, later expanded to all blocks. This led to a reduction in pollution in the area. In 2003, after regular maintenance, when the unit was restarted, there was an explosion and fire in the turbo generator , which was cooled with hydrogen gas ; the generator was destroyed by the oxyhydrogen explosion .
