The Emden power plant is a Statkraft operated power plant in Emden . It consists of a gas and steam combined cycle power plant block , which has now been closed, and a biomass block that continues to be operated.

technology

The combined cycle plant was fired with natural gas and had an installed capacity of 450  MW . A combined cycle power plant is a substructure of a gas power plant , in which steam for a downstream steam turbine is generated with the approx. 450 ° C exhaust gases from the gas turbine to improve the efficiency . This makes better use of the fuel. In the case of the Emden power station, which is one of the first combined cycle power stations, the overall efficiency is 42 percent. Modern systems, on the other hand, achieve up to 60%.

history

A power plant was built on the site as early as 1954. In 1972 today's power plant went into operation. Statkraft acquired it from E.ON in 2009 . In 2012 the power station was shut down for economic reasons, while the biomass block continues to operate.

Capacity reserve

In February 2020, the gas turbine was awarded a 50 megawatt bid by the transmission system operator in the capacity reserve tender. The reserve power must be provided from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2022.
