The Four Corners Power Plant is a coal-fired power plant located near Farmington , New Mexico, USA .

The installed capacity of the power plant built in the 1960s was originally 2.04  GW . However, units 1–3 were shut down in 2013, bringing the total output to 1,540 MW. The owner Arizona Public Service bought its stake in units 4 and 5 from Southern California Edison in 2015 and will build a new flue gas desulphurisation system by 2018 in order to meet the requirements of the EPA . In 1979 the first flue gas scrubber (FGD) was installed, but it is no longer sufficient today.

Overview map

The dammed Morgan Lake, into which water from the San Juan River is pumped, serves as a cooling water reserve.

Coal supply

The coal is transported from the Navajo open-cast mine ( Navajo Mine ) to the power plant via the Navajo Mine Railroad, an insulated railway line electrified with 25 kV 60 Hz .

The open-cast mine delivers around 6 million tonnes of coal per year; in 2016, the previous owner BHP Billiton sold it to North American Coal .
