The Penide power plant ( Portuguese Barragem de Penide ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Cávado River , located in the north of Portugal in the Braga district . About one kilometer upstream from the power plant, the A3 motorway crosses the Cávado. The town of Barcelos is about seven kilometers downstream .
The power plant went into operation with the first machine in 1951. Another machine was added in 1970. The power plant was renovated in 1995. It is owned by HDN, Energia do Norte, SA (HDN) but is operated by Energias de Portugal (EDP).
Barrier structure
The shut-off is a dam made of masonry with a height of 21 m above the foundation bed (20 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 24 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 51 m. The volume of the structure is 9000 m³.
The dam is divided into a machine house on both sides of the river and a weir in the middle. The weir system consists of two gates through which a maximum of 2400 m³ / s can be discharged. The design flood is 2400 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring was determined to be once every 100 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 16.7 m (maximum 20 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.69 km² and holds 0.5 million m³ of water.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 4.8 MW, the Penide power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal . The average annual production is 22.3 million kWh .

Two Kaplan turbines with different capacities are installed. The following table gives an overview:

The nominal voltage of the generators is 4 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 4 kV to 15 kV using power transformers.
