The Suralaya power plant is a coal-fired power plant in Indonesia , which is located about 7 km northeast of the port of the city of Merak in the province of Banten on the Sunda Strait . The town of Cilegon is 10 km south of the power plant. With an installed capacity of 4,025 MW , it is the most powerful coal-fired power plant in Indonesia and serves to cover the base load .

The facility occupies a total of 240.65 hectares. The power plant is connected via its switchgear to the 500 kV line , which forms the heart of the Java - Madura - Bali (JAMALI) network. The chimneys of the power plant are 200 m high.

Power plant units

The power plant consists of a total of eight units with different capacities, construction of which began in 1980 (Units 1 and 2) and which went into operation from 1984 to 2011. For units 1 to 7, the turbines were supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), the generators by Mitsubishi Electric Company (Melco) and the steam boilers by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W). Block 8 was equipped by Shanghai Co. Ltd (SCO). The following table gives an overview:

The power plant still has two gas turbines with 20 MW each, which should enable a black start.

Power generation

The following table provides an overview of the power generation and coal consumption of the power plant:

year Electricity generation (billion kWh) Coal consumption (million t)
2007 23.171 12,448
2008 21.64 11.624
2009 22.651 11.632
2010 23.057 11.743
2011 23.403 11.653
2012 22,351 11,047

In 2012 the power plant generated 22.351 billion kWh (or 22.351 GWh ), which corresponded to more than half of the generation of Indonesia Power (33.449 billion kWh) and 15.36% of the total annual demand in the JAMALI network (145.545 billion kWh) ). The peak load in the JAMALI network in 2012 was 21.6 GW . On average, 0.49 kg of coal was burned in Suralaya in 2012 to generate one kWh. The thermal efficiency of the Suralaya power plant is between 32.1 and 35.6%.

Others

The units of the power plant are designed to burn coal from Bukit Asam on Sumatra . This type of coal ( English subbituminous coal ) lies between brown and hard coal in terms of properties. The properties of this coal can be found here. Other sources of supply for coal are mines on Kalimantan . The coal is delivered by ship. The power plant therefore has its own pier and storage space for the coal. Coal is usually in stock for 20 to 35 days, which corresponds to a storage quantity of up to 1.155 million t of coal with an average daily consumption of 33,000 t.

The power plant is owned by PT PLN (Persero) but operated by PT Indonesia Power Suralaya GBU .
