The Krakow-Upper Silesian Railway ( KrOs ; Polish: Kolej Krakowsko-Górnośląska ) was the first railway company in the Crown Land of Galicia and Lodomeria , the part of Poland that had been under Austrian rule since 1772 , although the construction at the initiative of the Senate of the City of Cracow was still partially independent Republic of Krakow began, from which on March 1, 1844 a privilege to build and operate the railway was granted.

history

The 67-kilometer main line was opened on October 13, 1847, one year after the Grand Duchy of Krakow was incorporated into the Austrian crown land of Galicia . It led from Kraków to Myslowitz , a border town in the east of Prussian Upper Silesia, which was connected to the Upper Silesian Railway on October 18, 1847 . Between Krakow and the Prussian border the route led through Trzebinia and then through Szczakowa, which was very close to the then Russian border. In the following year, on April 1, 1848, north of this border in the immediate vicinity of the Szczakowa station (today Jaworzno Szczakowa ), the Granica terminus (German border ) of the Warsaw-Vienna railway was opened.

Since 1847 there was a continuous track connection via the Upper Silesian Railway over the route of the various Silesian railway companies to Berlin and further west, from 1848 also via Wilhelmsbahn and Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn to Vienna.

The Austrian state bought the company on May 30, 1850 and took over the business on January 1, 1852.

The network of this kk eastern state railway was further expanded. On June 26, 1858, the lines west of Krakow were transferred to the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Nordbahn , which received both the old main line and the purely Austrian connection from Vienna with the line between Oświęcim (Auschwitz) and Trzebinia opened on March 1, 1856 to Krakow.
