The type ML 440 C from Krauss-Maffei is a standard-gauge works railroad and shunting locomotive with diesel-hydraulic drive , 440 HP (324 kW) and three axles ( wheel arrangement C). It was developed in the early 1950s.
history
The locomotives of the type ML 400 C had - like the structurally similar Wehrmacht locomotive WR 360 C 14 (known as V 36) - an end driver's cab. On the ML 440 C, on the other hand, the driver's cab was shifted more towards the center of the vehicle and arranged a little higher, so that the visibility was much better. From around the 10th locomotive, the front structure was also heavily beveled, which gives the locomotives a characteristic appearance.
The axles are driven by a jackshaft arranged at one end of the vehicle via coupling rods . The wheelbase is only 3 m; the locomotives can therefore travel on very tight curves of up to 50 m radius, which makes them particularly suitable for industrial railways. It is noteworthy that the wheel diameter of the locomotives has the old "Bavarian" dimension of 1,006 mm, which was also used for the drive wheels of many local steam locomotives of the Bavarian State Railway .
Among other things, locomotives of the type ML 440 C were used by the Augsburg Local Railway (locomotives No. 21 to 26) and by the Supreme Building Authority in Munich for the port railways in Regensburg and Aschaffenburg (V 40-1 to V 40-7). The Bundeswehr also procured a copy in 1957 (serial number 18334). This locomotive is now an exhibit in the Westerwald adventure station in Westerburg . A total of about 60 locomotives were built.
Most of the ML 440 C are now retired; However, the Augsburg Local Railway still uses some of its locomotives. These have been equipped with radio remote controls since the 1980s. The AlzChem in Unterneukirchen still uses these locomotives.
Similar types are the ML 500 C , in contrast to the ML 440 C with a front circulation, and the ML 550 D with four axes.
Comparable types from other manufacturers with the same engine and transmission were the Jung R 42 C and Henschel DH 440 , also derived from the WR 360 C 14.
