The industrial and works locomotive ML 500 C was built by Krauss-Maffei between 1954 and 1966 .

history

The locomotives of the type ML 500 C are structurally constructed similarly to the V 36 and the smaller sister series ML 440 C . In contrast to the V 36, the driver's cab is shifted a little more towards the center of the vehicle and is arranged a little higher. This resulted in better visibility. The axles are driven by a jackshaft located at one end of the vehicle over the coupling rods. The wheelbase is 3 m, so that very tight track radii of up to 50 m radius can be used. The low axle load of 16 to 18 t, depending on the type, was also very interesting for industrial companies.

The machines were delivered with a high-speed Mercedes-Benz MB 836 Bb engine as standard . The engine achieves an output of 500  hp through a turbocharger . Since, in contrast to the ML 440 C, the smaller MB engine was used instead of the MAN engine , the front hood could be designed significantly lower. It could be shortened so that there was room for one circulation. It is also known that the MB engine could be replaced by a Caterpillar 3412 DI-TA in the course of an overhaul .

With the takeover of the Wilhelmsburger Industriebahn in 1962, two copies were added to the inventory of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), which now classified them as the V 50 series . However, since there were enough class V 60 locomotives available, the two loners were sold as early as 1964. The V 50 001 came to the Verden-Walsroder Railway , where it initially kept its DB company number.

Most of the locomotives built have now been decommissioned and their whereabouts are unknown. Around 20 copies have been preserved, including the former DB V 50 001, which is used by the Schwäbische Alb-Bahn GmbH .
