Krešimir Krnjević

Krešimir Krnjević (born September 7, 1927 in Zagreb ) is a Croatian - Canadian neurophysiologist .

Krnjević graduated from Edinburgh University with a degree in medicine in 1949 (MB, Ch.B.), where he obtained a bachelor's degree in natural sciences in 1951 and a Ph.D. in 1953. before joining the University of Washington and the Australian National University as a postdoctoral fellow . From 1959 to 1964 he worked as a research assistant at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge , England.

In 1964 Krnjević initially received a visiting professorship at McGill University in Montreal , Canada. From 1965 to 1999 he was director of the local anesthesia research department and from 1978 to 1987 professor of physiology. In 2001 he retired .

Krnjević was editor of the scientific journal Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology . He published over 200 original papers and more than 100 textbook contributions. In 1981 he was one of the most cited scientific authors of all.

Krnjević made important contributions to the clarification of the role that glutamic acid and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) have in signal processing in the brain. He was also able to show that the calcium concentration in nerve cells is important for their excitability and that calcium levels that are too high lead to cell death.
