Groß Rosenburg district moat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Groß Rosenburg district moat is a late Neolithic circular moat near Groß Rosenburg , a district of Barby in the Salzlandkreis , Saxony-Anhalt .

Research history

The facility was discovered during an aerial survey by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt . In 2005 a test excavation was carried out by the Institute for Art History and Archeology of Europe at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg under the direction of André Spatzier . The excavation was carried out on an area of 410 m² in the northeast area.

Findings

The facility consists of a simple trench with a diameter of about 70 m. In the northeast it has a 1.70 m wide opening. The trench was created as a bottom ditch and has a depth of between 0.40 m and 1.10 m and a width between 2.00 m and 3.10 m. A large number of surface finds indicate that the facility has already suffered some damage from erosion and agriculture. The backfill consisted of humus , in the lower area there was flooding of sand and sandy humus material.

Numerous pits and a Bronze Age stone packing grave have been discovered and excavated inside and outside the trench .

Finds

The majority of the finds from the trench made up ceramic shards. In addition, bones, flint artifacts and clay were found. The stone packing grave contained two urns filled with corpse fire .

Dating

Using the radiocarbon method, some of the boils could be dated to 3350–3080 cal. BC. The pottery from the ditch shows features of both the younger Funnel Beaker culture and the Bernburg culture . According to the ceramic material found, the pits are mainly assigned to the Bernburg culture, but some also belong to the late Bronze Age . The stone packing grave belongs to the Late Bronze Age Saale estuary group.
