The Cretan dog's tongue is a biennial, 20–80 cm high plant. In the first year of growth, only a rosette of lanceolate, dense, soft and hairy leaves is formed. In the second year the inflorescence appears . The leaves are sessile in the upper part of the stem, encompassing half of the stem and often without distinct lateral nerves. The short-stalked flowers appear in bractless coils , they are initially pink, later pale blue with strikingly dark nerves.
