Crucifixion window in St. Martin in Drove

The Crucifixion Window in Drove is a leaded glass window located in the Church of St. Martin in Drove and created in 1538.

history

The window was donated by Pastor Hilbrand von Wevorden from Düren and built into the east window of the northern nave , which was retained when the church was rebuilt.

presentation

The two-part window shows a crucifixion group, rich in figures, without a frame. The crucified with the crown of thorns is shown with closed eyes at the moment of death. Maria and three other women stand and sit to the left of the cross, crying , with a soldier standing on the far side. Above it is indicated with the architecture of a medieval city as well as with the rotunda of the Holy Sepulcher Jerusalem . To the right of the cross, outside the disciple John , inside the Roman centurion, whom tradition calls Longinus . This is accompanied by the words: Vere filius dei erat iste (“Truly, this was God's Son”, Matt. 27:54). With the hands and feet and the wound on the side of Jesus, angels catch the shed blood with goblets.

The founder of the window Hilbrand von Wevorden and on the right the coat of arms of the parents

Below the crucifixion scene, in a renaissance frame on the left , you can see the strongly renewed portrait of the donor kneeling in front of a prayer desk. On the right is an angel who serves as a shield holder for the two parental coats of arms , Bernhard von Wevorden and Fritza von Thorr. All parts move in the mature forms of the Renaissance and the inscription states the year 1538. The tracery has housed the Rohe coat of arms with an inscription underneath and the year 1741. In the spandrels to the right and left there are angel's heads.

Heinrich Oidtmann wrote in 1929 in his book Die Rheinischen Glasmalereien : “The right side panel is praiseworthy, especially the head of the well-conceived Johannes and the figure of the captain (...) The otherwise well-drawn head of the Savior sits too low between the shoulders. "
