Achim Heukemes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Achim Heukemes (born September 25, 1951 in Wuppertal ) is a German professional extreme athlete who has his greatest successes in single- handed runs. Today he lives in Rottendorf near Würzburg .

Life

Achim Heukemes grew up in Wuppertal and learned the trade of industrial clerk .

At the age of 14 he left elementary school in order to do an apprenticeship as a merchant at a freight forwarding company . His first job at a haulage company awakened his passion for long-haul journeys , so that at the age of 21 he got his class I and II driver's license in order to swap his office work for that of a long-distance driver. But even in his free time he already had a preference for countries and the streets. He crossed numerous countries on his motorcycle and undertook non-stop tours: for example, he drove around 2000 kilometers non-stop several times from Wuppertal to the north face of the Eiger .

In 1983 he moved from Wuppertal to Mittenwald ( Upper Bavaria ). There he met Kurt König , a successful mountain runner , who persuaded him to take part in a 10 km run in Munich (New Year's Eve 1984). From then on, Heukemes was enthusiastic about running and so he began to use waiting times to run on his journeys as a long-distance driver. After just nine months, he ran his first marathon in Berlin in 3:03 hours. Soon he was known as the “fastest running truck driver” in Germany and took part in numerous large mountain runs ( Osterfelderkopf , Kitzbüheler Horn , Matterhorn , Kanzelwand ).

In 1985 he gave up motorcycling after a motorcycle accident and now concentrated entirely on running. In order to be able to train more, he switched again in 1988 from truck driver to shift manager of a shipping company in Nuremberg . Thanks to his good sporting results, Heukemes got to know the 100 km runner Hartmut Häber at a competition and was immediately fascinated by the 100 km route.

Finally, Heukemes gave up his job in order to be one of the few professional athletes in the ultramarathon to be able to devote himself completely to his passion for running. Several country crossings followed in record time (e.g. 2005 crossing of Australia , 4568 km in 43 days). After the USA double crossing in 2011, he switched to extreme cycling, where he now takes part in the toughest bike races in the world. Today he is supported by sponsors , has written two books and gives lectures on his country trips.

Sporting successes

To date, Heukemes has achieved a total of fifteen overall victories in international races and fourteen second places and eight third places in international races.
