The Cross Square is a place in the Swiss city of Zurich southeast of the train station Stadelhofen . Kreuzbühlstrasse, Zollikerstrasse, Forchstrasse and Zeltweg meet at Kreuzplatz. The Forchbahn (S18), tram lines 11 and 8 and trolleybus line 31 of the Zurich public transport network open up the square. The name Kreuzplatz comes from the cross that stood there as a landmark of the urban ban area .

history

In the plague years of 1611, the great council of Zurich ordered the construction of a branch church with a cemetery for the three former communities of Hirslanden , Hottingen and Riesbach . The Käppeli at Kreuz am Klosbach was chosen as the location, almost exactly the location of today's tram waiting hall.

Since 1629 the church has been used for services and sermons. Although the affiliated communities of the Sprengels were getting bigger, it could only be enlarged and renovated in 1729. In 1783 it was expanded and demolished in 1839 after the construction of today's Neumünster Church.

Between Klosbachstrasse, Zeltweg and «Artergut» some buildings from the early 19th century were preserved for a long time. When they threatened to be canceled, the popular initiative “Save the Kreuzplatz” was submitted on January 19, 2000 . Their aim was to assign the area to a core zone and to only allow building on the basis of an additional design plan. The popular initiative was discussed in advance by a special commission and recommended to the local council for rejection. On May 30, 2001, the latter clearly rejected the initiative. The Zurich electorate rejected the initiative on September 23, 2001 with a large majority. On December 19, 2000, the building section of Zurich granted the Kreuzplatz owner group the approval for a new building with restaurant, shop, office and practice rooms as well as 23 apartments. The project was implemented after the referendum.

Development

A market takes place every Wednesday on the open space created by the demolition. At Kreuzplatz there is also a Migros , a Coop and a Denner , as well as a Starbucks Coffee and the vocational secondary school of the Evangelical School. The Zurich University of Education has a location there with its art department.
