description

Rear view

A Maltese cross is carved into the small monument, which measures approximately 180 x 80 x 20 cm . To the left and right of the trunk of the cross there are depictions of the plow and six . This is a modern replica with traces of processing that shows hardly any signs of weathering. The cross stone, originally from the 15th or 16th century, was badly weathered and was held together with iron clips. It was replaced during road construction in 1975/1976 and was deleted as a monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments (D-5-74-120-23).

legend

The cross stone with plow and six stands for a servant who is said to have been dragged to death here by his master. According to another more believable legend, and because of the agricultural implements shown, a farmer is said to have fallen here and crushed by his own wagon. It is also said to have been used as a death stone . Corpses from Peuerling were brought to the Engelthaler cemetery. The coffin was placed on a cart, and under the coffin lay thick bundles of straw, the so-called dead straw. On the way back from the cemetery, the driver was no longer allowed to look around and had to drive very quickly so that all the straw would be lost due to the jolting. If that didn't work, he had to stop here and put down the bundles of straw. According to legend, if the carter brought the straw back, someone would die in the same year. If the straw got under the cattle, epidemics would break out. The custom of this banishment from the dead says that the dead return as long as they see their own straw. The custom of the dead straw was still in use in the Altdorf and Hersbruck area well into the 20th century.
