The cross street is a downtown street in Wesel on the Lower Rhine.

location

The Kreuzstraße runs for a length of 535 meters in north-south direction through the Wesel city center. In the south it branches off from Bundesstraße 58 (Schillstraße). The B 58 in turn leads south past the citadel to a junction with federal highway 8 , which runs south of the city center as part of the city ring road. The southern section of Kreuzstraße up to the confluence of the Esplanade street is surrounded by residential buildings and adjacent residential areas, while there are also commercial buildings north of the Esplanade. In its northernmost section from the confluence with Brandstrasse, Kreuzstrasse is a traffic-calmed zone. The so-called Mathenakreuz (Mathenakreuz) is located within this traffic-calmed zone, at which Kreuzstraße crosses Viehor and Hohe Straße as part of the Wesel pedestrian zone. The Mathenakreuz is at the same time the northern end of Kreuzstraße, which later bears the name Korbmacherstraße and ultimately leads north to the city ring.

The northern part of Kreuzstrasse is characterized by its proximity to the pedestrian zone and the central north-south axis through the city. Accordingly, the Mathenakreuz bus stop on Kreuzstraße is noted in the local transport plan as the central stop in Wesel city center.

history

Wesel 1588: Today's Kreuzstrasse runs past the Mathenakirche

Historically, Kreuzstrasse was in front of the walls that surrounded the old town in the area of Mathena-Vorstadt . The Mathenakirche was located at today's corner of Hohe Strasse and Kreuzstrasse . The northern part of Kreuzstrasse ran parallel to the city wall, thus reflecting the historical separation between the old town around the Willibrordi Cathedral and the Mathena suburb to the east. In the 16th century there was a chapel with a calvary outside the city in the area of today's Stralsunder Straße . Led to this chapel from the entrance gate cattle grid a starting Way of the Cross through the Mathena suburb on the cross road and the Lippetor. The name of Kreuzstraße goes back to this way of the cross, and the Lippetor was also renamed Kreuztor.

Kreuzstrasse was the location of the Protestant elementary school in Wesels until it moved to Böhlstrasse in 1912. After the first Wesel Rhine bridge was completed in 1917 , Kreuzstrasse became an important traffic axis as part of the connection from the Rhine bridge to the Wesel train station . It was not until 1933 that Schillstrasse was created as a direct link between the bridge and the train station. This street crossed the Wesel citadel , which had to be bypassed beforehand. At that time it was also planned that Kreuzstrasse and Korbmacherstrasse would replace the connection further west along the Grosser Markt and Kornmarkt as the primary north-south axis through the city center. As part of the reconstruction after the Second World War , this plan was retained and a further step was taken to relocate the city center with the construction of the first post-war town hall at the former location of the Mathenakirche. In 1951 Kreuzstrasse was one of the first inner-city streets with a completed carriageway. The town hall was inaugurated a year later. In the 1970s, a large department store was built in its place at the corner of Kreuzstrasse and Hohe Strasse, which is considered the most important magnet for the city center. The administration building for Stadtwerke Wesel was built in 1958 on the corner of Kreuzstrasse and Esplanade. It was demolished in 2002 and replaced with a shopping mall. On the opposite side of the intersection was the local district army replacement office , which was temporarily used for other purposes by the Bundeswehr after it was closed in 2012 and is to be replaced by barrier-free residential buildings and rooms for the radiological practice of the Marienhospital Wesel by 2019.
