The Giesel war memorial was erected in the Giesel district of the Neuhof community in the eastern Hessian district of Fulda in Hesse and commemorates the fallen and missing of the First World War and the Second World War .

location

It is located on the monument square in Laurentiusstrasse opposite the Catholic St. Laurentius Church on the L 3206 state road to Neuhof. It was created from red sandstone by the Petersberg sculptor Johannes Kirsch .

history

Monument relief

The present monument from 1962 is a replacement for the monument from 1926 that was demolished in May 1960. It was given a new location on the newly created memorial square.

The demolished war memorial from 1926 previously only commemorated the dead of the First World War 1914–1918 and was supplemented on both sides by two stele-like memorial stones adapted to the memorial style after 1945. The supplementary stones bore the names of the fallen and missing soldiers of the Second World War 1939–1945.

Before that, during the land consolidation carried out from 1958 to 1962 , the Gieselbach running underneath had been piped. The piping of the previously open watercourse was carried out with the inlet south of the former hunting lodge (moated castle) in Schloßstraße, through the location up to the current outlet after crossing under Sturmiusstraße (state road L 3079) towards Fulda at the level of the fairground.

In 1963, the congregational handover and church consecration took place under Mayor Leonhard Glozbach and Pastor Josef Mönninger .

In the cemetery in Giesel there is also a war grave for the victims of the Second World War in Giesel.

description

The memorial is created in the 1960s monument style. Its four steles made of red Weser sandstone are located on a spacious green area . The three smaller ones on the left are on the floor and have rectangular bronze name plaques on them. The fourth and largest stands upright and bears a bronze relief of the “risen Christ” on its front , placed on a grave cave that is recognizable in the sandstone.

Stele 1 bears the following inscription on the bronze plate with raised letters:

THAT
YOU STILL LIVE PROVE THOSE YOU WORTHY WHO GAVE EVERYTHING
TO THE
FATHERLAND

The second and third stele are also each equipped with a bronze plate with raised writing, with an additional tablet on the third stele under the large bronze plate. On the second stele the names of 44 fallen and one missing person from the First World War are listed, on the third stele with an additional plaque the names of the 42 fallen and 17 missing persons from the Second World War are recorded.
