Tributaries

The river system of the Giesel, flowing from west to east, fans out into the Giesel itself via the Gresel (10.0 km), the Saurode (7.9 km) in the north and the southern Giesel (4.6 km). The Gresel brings with it a catchment area of 15,585 at the mouth of the Saurode, the Saurode an almost equal area of 13,112 km²; over the Saurode, the Giesel is a little longer at 11.4 km.

The southern Giesel, which flows in only 1 km below, drains 8.889 km and is thus well behind the actual Giesel, which is united with the Saurode as Gresel (up to 29.469 km²). Regardless of this, the river stationing has so far (March 2018) still listed the southern Giesel, together with the estuary, only 7.0 km long under the river code number 4232, as the main arm, the actual Giesel or Gresel under the number 42322 as a tributary and the Saurode under 423222 as a tributary 2nd order.

The Giesel with its tributaries Gieselbach, Saurode, Sorbach, Dichert and Hellersbach is the main body of water and drains into the Fulda at Kohlhaus / Bronnzell .

Worth knowing / Kohlhäuser Bridge

The "Kohlhäuser Bridge" or "Fulda Bridge" over the Fulda was already the transition of the old trade route ( "Alte Straße" , Via Regia ) from Frankfurt to Leipzig over the Fulda River in the Middle Ages .

A stone bridge was built near Kohlhaus at the beginning of the 18th century. The eastern part of the bridge with the figures of Maria and Josef was built under the Fulda prince Abbot Adalbert von Schleiffras . Before 1771, under Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra , the stone bridge was extended to the west (in the direction of the Johannesberg provost ) and with the statues of St. Boniface and Emperor Heinrich II . crowned. His coat of arms with the year of construction is attached to the south side.
