Johannesberg is a district of the East Hessian city ​​of Fulda . The town, located southwest of the city shortly before the confluence of the Gieselbach in the Fulda , was incorporated in 1972.

history

In 811 the first Johannesberg church, built by the third abbot of the Fulda monastery , Ratgar , was consecrated by Archbishop Richulf of Mainz . After the establishment of a Benedictine monastery (836) by Rabanus Maurus , a Romanesque basilica was built on the site of the old church around the year 1000 , which burned down and was plundered several times over the following centuries. At the same time, the importance of the provost grew steadily , while monastic life took a back seat.

From 1686 on, the church, which was rebuilt in the 16th century, was redesigned under the provost Bonifatius von Buseck and above all under Conrad von Mengersen and received its baroque form, which is essentially still preserved today. The provost's office was also expanded and received numerous buildings and gardens. In the course of secularization, the provost's office became a state domain in 1802, and the Klostermann family managed it until 1968.

In the following years the castle and the associated buildings were renovated and housed the German Center for Handicrafts and Monument Preservation . After his bankruptcy , his work is continued today by the Propstei Johannesberg gGmbH .

On August 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Johannesberg was incorporated into the city of Fulda by virtue of state law as part of the regional reform in Hesse .
