Maberzell is a district of the East Hessian city of Fulda . The hamlet of Trätzhof belongs to Maberzell .

history

Location of Maberzell ( Maberzel ) on a map of the Hochstift Fulda from 1574

The first document naming of Maberzell takes place in a Fulda Urbar (around 1010) under the name Magebrahcelle. The name probably comes from the monk / hermit Maganberat, who was sent from the Fulda monastery to found a cell . More and more people then settled around the monk's cell. The fortified church tower with the fortified cemetery of the old church was built around 1200. The Maberzeller church tower was the last medieval signal post before Fulda in a northerly direction along the Fulda (next tower at Kämmerzell, downstream). The church was dedicated to Saint Vincent of Valencia and over time it was expanded to the west.

Before the Second World War , emigrants from Dalherda in the Rhön were settled in a village north of Maberzell which was named Trätzhof . The resettlement was necessary because of the establishment of a military training area for the Wehrmacht . Trätzhof has mostly Protestant residents. Maberzell was hit by bombs in the Second World War, but only marginally damaged. Because the old church became too small for almost 1000 Catholics around 1970, it was decided to build a new church . Since 2004 Maberzell has owned the largest altar wall painting in Central Europe.

Incorporation

On August 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Maberzell with Trätzhof was incorporated into the city of Fulda by means of regional law as part of the regional reform .

Churches

Catholic

Maberzell has two Catholic churches, an old listed church with a choir tower from the 12th century and a nave from 1847, as well as a new church from 1973. In the tower of the old church there is still an active bell that strikes every day (every full and half Hour) and to the angelus prayers. In addition to the clock, there are three bells in the church tower. The smallest of the bells, the Andreas bell, Maberzell was able to keep during both world wars. In 1990 the existence of the listed old church was seriously endangered, a partial demolition had already been decided, possibly a move to the Hessenpark Neu-Anspach planned. Massive protests by citizens and the monument council of the city of Fulda prevented this. From 2003 the nave was restored and put to commercial use. Today it houses a photo studio.

The new church in Maberzell from 1973 is consecrated to the Holy Cross and has the shape of a tent. The organ was built into the church in 1990. A picture by the painter Ante Milas hangs on the altar wall with the title “Story of Redemption” . The altarpiece is the largest in Central Europe at 110 m².

Maberzell belongs to the church of the pastoral association St. Antonius of Padua, Fulda-West with the Catholic parishes of St. Markus in Haimbach , St. Hubertus in Oberrode , St. Andreas in Fulda-Neuenberg and St. Laurentius in Neuhof-Giesel .
