The chapel is known in the region under the name "Schulzenbergkapelle" and is located between the villages of Haimbach and Maberzell , not far from the L 3418, which connects the two villages.

history

In 754 AD the funeral procession of St. Boniface on the way from Mainz is said to have stopped in front of Fulda on the southern slope of the "Schulzenberg" . A cross is said to have stood at this point and the 371 meter high mountain near Haimbach is said to have been given the name "Kreuzberg".

The beginnings of the Schulzenberg Chapel probably go back to a wooden chapel in the late Middle Ages when it was still called Kreuzberg. On an old engraving from Fulda (around 1520), however, it is already called “Schultesberg”. Until the Peasant Wars in 1525, the name "Kreuzberg" was common, and as "Krüüzberg" the name remained in the dialect for a long time .

In 1658, during the reign of the Fulda abbot Joachim Graf von Gravenegg (1644–1671), the existing chapel was replaced by a stone successor. It was considered the first baroque church in the Fulda region. It is not known whether the hermit's house or hermitage, which stood near the chapel until 1734, already existed at that time.

In 1804, the stone chapel was auctioned for demolition in the course of secularization .

On the southern access path from Haimbach to the Schulzenberg Chapel, there is a baroque wayside shrine of the painful Mother of God as a Vesper portrait .

A new building did not take place until 1899/1900 in its present form. The plans come from the architect Arnold Güldenpfennig sen. (1830–1908), diocesan master builder in Paderborn , who planned its current appearance in the neo-Gothic style. It is a neo-Gothic hall building with three axes, with a three-sided choir closure. It is a small hall church with a gable roof , a slender roof turret and a glazed east gable that can be opened for pilgrimages and church services.

The pilgrimage chapel stands on the summit of the Schuzenberg in a nature reserve.

Modern times

Renovation of the chapel:

The structure of the chapel was damaged. It was renovated to some extent after the Second World War . During the Nazi era , it had only stood there for a few years with the roof open and other damage, which later took revenge. During the last thorough renovation in 2000, the tower, in which a bell hangs again, was renewed and its appearance changed. The former very slim and pointed church tower is now more compact and not so steep.

With the end of the renovation work on the chapel on Sunday, August 13, 2000, the 100th anniversary of the Schulzenberg chapel was also celebrated. Auxiliary Bishop Ludwig Schick from Fulda celebrated a service in front of the Sacred Heart Chapel because of the large number of participants.

New wayside shrine:

About 850 m behind the day care center in Maberzell, on the eastern slope of the Schulzenberg, the new "Millennium shrine" made of light-colored sandstone with a bench by the side of the path was built.

Landscape protection area

The summit area of the Schulzenberg is designated as a landscape protection area.
