A military cemetery is a fortress-like -developed cemetery , which (similar to one of the local population in an emergency as a haven of refuge or fortress church / fortified church ) was used. In the Middle Ages, cemeteries had several beneficial properties that were used to protect local residents. They were surrounded by a cemetery wall, which usually only had one gate, and offered sufficient space. Villages with no castle or fortress in their vicinity therefore expanded the cemetery by adding corner towers, reinforced the walls and built buildings on the inside that even housed bakeries and breweries so that in the event of war one could stay in the cemetery.
