Nicolas-Marie-Joseph Chapuy

Nicolas-Marie-Joseph Chapuy (* 1790 in Paris ; † June 23, 1858 ibid) was a French officer , architect , architectural painter of vedute , draftsman and lithographer .

Life

Chapuy received his education at the École polytechnique in Paris and then served as an officer in the engineering corps of the Navy . He later worked as an architect in the French civil service and was extremely successful in assessing the condition and restoring medieval buildings. Nevertheless, because of his commitment to Bonapartism , he was dismissed and retired in 1817.

Chapuy initially worked as a freelance artist and drew images of important architectural landmarks, which he used as lithographs and to compile bundles for the art lovers market. From 1823, in cooperation with the archaeologist and author Théodore de Jolimont, the extensive art-historical work on the French cathedrals (Cathédrales françaises), for which Chapuy produced the illustrations .

In the following years, Chapuy traveled to France and sketched the most remarkable natural and architectural monuments of the individual regions. In 1824 he visited Amiens , 1826 Reims , 1827 Bourges and stayed in Alsace , two years later he roamed Provence and Burgundy , further south-west France and the cities of Poitiers , Bordeaux , Albi and Agen . From his travels, Chapuy always brought home detailed descriptions of objects, sketches and drawings , and a large number of appealing vedutas and romantic landscapes were created during this period .

In the mid-1830s, Chapuy was quite successful with his activity and received universal recognition from the relevant publishers, and he began to expand his artistic activities to other European countries. At the time, he worked very closely with the Paris publishing house Veith & Hauser, which often used original images and lithographs from his hand for art publications. For this publisher he traveled through Switzerland in 1838 and visited Lombardy as well as Milan and Lake Como . In the following year Chapuy roamed the Rhineland and in 1841 he stayed in Marseille before visiting Liguria , Pisa , Florence and Venice , in 1842 Chapuy painted in Spain.
