War memorial at St. Martin (2006)

The war memorial in the form of an equestrian statue in the municipality of Tannheim in what was then the Oberamt Leutkirch , People's State of Württemberg , was inaugurated on June 9, 1924 by Pastor Lamprecht from Diepoldshofen . The names of 40 victims of the First World War are noted on a stele . The names of the 88 fallen in World War II and 35 missing are on three additional steles attached in a semicircle around the equestrian statue. The war memorial between the parish church of St. Martin and the listed New Vicarage is located in the former part of the rectory garden on a specially designed space near the main street. The three steles with the victims of the Second World War were added later.

history

Festschrift from the District Warrior Day 1924

Within the community of Tannheim and the local warriors' association , there has been a desire for a long time to erect a memorial to commemorate those who died in the First World War. At the meeting of the municipal council on December 14, 1922, a part of the meadow in the manorial von Schaesberg Castle Garden, south between the church and the new rectory , opposite the main street, was planned as the site of the monument . A request from the mayor to Count von Schaesberg ended with a negative decision. As a result, the monument found its current location on the other side of the main street.

At the meeting on May 29, 1922, the Baresel company from Stuttgart was commissioned to carry out the necessary construction work and erect the monument . At the meeting on December 14, 1922, the sculptor Alois Joser from Leutkirch im Allgäu presented several models of a war memorial. It was agreed that he should be rewarded for building the monument with a delivery of 11 quintals of wheat and 10 quintals of rye . At the meeting on July 14, 1924, a request from the sculptor with the request for an additional payment of 680 Reichsmarks was discussed. The reason given for this was the larger size of the monument. In order to avoid possible disputes, the municipal council approved a sum of 300 RM.

The war memorial was originally supposed to open on Pentecost Sunday , June 8, 1924. It was then inaugurated on Whit Monday as part of a big festival, combined with a district warrior day, with the participation of many associations and 17 music bands. At the inauguration of the monument, the local warrior club celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Equestrian statue

The equestrian statue shows two soldiers. It stands on a pedestal on which the saying "centered GOD EARTH IS EVERYWHERE " in capital letters is engraved. Next to the sculpture are symmetrically arranged two steles, on which the names of the fallen and missing of both wars are noted. The rider is dressed in a uniform jacket, boots and a steel helmet . His head and posture are pointing downwards. He puts his left arm on the shoulder of a man standing to his left, wearing a cloak. The man with a head bandage holds his left arm in an arm sling .

In 1957 the war memorial was redesigned and changed again in 1974. After the changes and renovations, only the equestrian statue remained in its original form.
