Plant and sculpture

The monument consists of a stone pyramid on a base and a figure of a kneeling soldier. The memorial bears an inscription from the First World War on the front, side and back . Behind it there are four plaques with the names of the fallen from the Second World War , on which two stone bowls are placed. The inscription on the war memorial reads: "THE FALLEN UNDEFEATED HEROES FROM WALL NEAR VIENNA 1914 - 1918 THE GRATEFUL CITIZENS". The memorial was built by the artist Sepp Haberl and can be assigned to the period between the wars and the Second World War.

Another important work by Sepp Haberl is a gable grave slab with a relief of a sleeping genius at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 72B). Other works by Sepp Haberl are, for example, the Dollfuss monument on Rathausplatz , the Otto Glöckel bust in the Otto Glöckel School and the war memorial in the Penzing parish church .

history

Imperial monument around 1900
Previous sculpture and funding

The donations for the memorial were raised by the local residents. The custom of that time to enclose national coins with a memorial was discarded due to the lost war and the financial situation at the time and the coins were exchanged for paper money. Before that there was a monument for Emperor Franz Josef I , which was removed on December 4, 1922. According to plans from the 1920s, the imperial monument was to be erected again in front of the shooting range of the rifle club in the Maurer Forest .

revelation

The monument was unveiled on December 17, 1922. After a church service, the chairman of the Greyleder monument committee presented the work of art to the public, represented by the mayor of the bricklayer, Theodor Winterstein. Army Minister Carl Vaugoin remembered the victims of the war in a speech. In addition to Federal Councilor Rudolf Birbaumer, other politicians and representatives of the most important local associations attended the ceremony .
