The Maurer Wald (also Maurerwald ) is an approximately 4 km², mostly wooded excursion area on the southwestern outskirts of Vienna . Most of it belongs to the 23rd Viennese district of Liesing . It is part of the European protected area Wienerwald-Thermenregion and the Wienerwald biosphere reserve .

Location and landscape

The area with an altitude between 260 and 371  m above sea level. A. is located between the nature reserve of the Lainzer Tiergarten (13 district Hietzing ), within which about 1 km² of the Maurer Forest with the highest elevation lies, and the Föhrenberge Nature Park (Lower Austria). To the east is the eponymous district of Vienna, Mauer , to the south, the Liesing valley and the suburb Kalksburg . The western border is formed by the Gütenbach , on the other side of which are the Dorotheerwald and the Eichwiese. Lower Austria begins about 1 km to the west with the municipality of Breitenfurt and the Kaufbergen .

In the center of the Maurer Forest, south of the summit of the Wilder Berg , is the excursion restaurant Zur Schießstätte , named after a neighboring, now derelict civil shooting range . It was built in 1865 by Anton Oelzelt Ritter von Newin and made available to the municipality of Mauer in 1875. In 1945 the facility burned down and was later only built as an inn. The most popular hiking trails - u. a. The city ​​hiking trails no. 6 and 6a - lead from Mauer up into the forest area, some also from Rodaun , Kalksburg, Breitenfurt and Laab im Walde .

The Sterngarten is located 130 meters southwest of the Wotruba Church.

Geology and archeology

Geologically, the Maurer Forest is largely part of the flysch zone of the Eastern Alps , but has some limestone cliffs and flint zones - u. a. the archaeologically significant Antonshöhe , where the oldest traces of settlement in Vienna's urban area were found around 1930.
