After his father died in Calcutta in 1894 , his mother ruled the state as regent until Krishnaraja Wadiyar came of age on August 8, 1902 and took over government. He was appointed and confirmed with full governance by Viceroy Lord Curzon personally in the Jaganmohana Palace in Mysore.

On June 6, 1900, he married Maharani Pratapa Kumari Ammani (born 1889), Princess of Kathiawar in what is now Gujarat .

He was considered a philosopher-king and was compared to the ancient Indian emperor Ashoka . Mahatma Gandhi called him Rajarshi , which means "holy king". In 1912 the new Amba Vilas palace, begun during his mother's reign, was completed.

At the time of his death, he was considered one of the richest men of his time, with an estimated personal fortune of $ 400 million, which in 2010 would have been $ 56 billion.
