Kristen Helveg Petersen (born November 29, 1909 in Sønder Longelse on Langeland , † April 23, 1997 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish politician of the social liberal party Det Radical Venstre . His son Niels Helveg Petersen and his grandsons Morten Helveg Petersen and Rasmus Helveg Petersen are also well-known Danish politicians. His wife was the mayor of Copenhagen, Lilly Helveg Petersen .

Life

Kristen Helveg Petersen began his political career as chairman of the youth organization of the social liberals, the Radikal Ungdom (1942 to 1945). In 1961 he became Minister of Education under Prime Minister Viggo Kampmann and remained in office until 1964. Under Hilmar Baunsgaard , Helveg Petersen became Minister of Culture in 1968 and at the same time assumed responsibility for developing countries and disarmament. He headed the ministry until 1971. Helveg Petersen was a member of the Folketing between 1964 and 1975 . From 1973 to 1975 he sat in the European Parliament . From 1976 to 1978 he was chairman of his party Radical Venstre.

From 1974 to 1992 Helveg Petersen was chairman of the Landsforeningen Ligeværd Association , which advocates the inclusion of developmentally inhibited children and young people. He developed the club into a large organization with departments all over Denmark. The Helveg Prize is awarded annually in honor of Helveg Petersen.
