Kristian Kater (born September 20, 1983 in Lohne (Oldenburg) ) is a German business economist and politician ( SPD ). He has been the mayor of Vechta since November 4, 2019 .

Life

School, studies and work

Kristian Kater, born 1983 in Lohne (Oldenburg) , grew up in Vechta and graduated from high school Antonianum in 2003 . After his community service, he pursued a dual course of study at the Dual University in Ravensburg , which he completed with a degree in business administration . As such, he then worked for a youth travel agency in Vechta. Kater interrupted this activity for a full-time job with the SPD. In 2017 he returned to his training facility as office manager.

Party offices

Kater has been a member of the SPD since he was 14 years old and was active in the Jusos in the Vechta district and in the Weser-Ems SPD district . During the Lower Saxony state election campaign in 2008 , he worked for six months at the Lower Saxony SPD state association . Kater worked until 2017 as an assistant to the SPD members of the Bundestag Dennis Rohde and Gabriele Groneberg .

From February 18, 2012 to August 31, 2019, Kristian Kater was chairman of the SPD sub-district Vechta.

Political mandates

In the local elections in 2006, Kater ran for the first time (unsuccessfully) as a city councilor. Kater was councilor of the city of Vechta from 2011 to 2019 (most recently as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and as deputy mayor) and since 2016 also a member of the Vechta district council.

Kater ran for the 2017 federal election in the Cloppenburg - Vechta constituency and received 20.4 percent of the first votes; Silvia Breher (CDU) was directly elected and won the best first-vote result of all CDU Bundestag candidates.

In the 2019 mayoral election in Vechta, Kater, who ran for a civic alliance made up of the SPD, FDP, Green Youth Vechta and the voter community "Wir für Vechta", won the runoff election on November 3rd with 67.5 percent ahead of the non-party CDU candidate Heribert Mählmann (32.5 percent). On the following day, Kater replaced Helmut Gels (CDU) as mayor, who had won the 2011 election.

Private

Kristian Kater is married and has three sons.
