Helmut Gels (born October 8, 1952 in Meppen ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2011 to 2019 he was full-time mayor of the Lower Saxony district town of Vechta . Gels has been President of the German Red Cross Regional Association Oldenburg since 2020 .

Life

1972 and 1978 Helmut gel was in the Air Force of the Armed Forces . From 1981 to 1987 he studied law at the University of Osnabrück . Helmut Gels passed his second state examination in law at the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court . He has been a lawyer since 1990. He was then a member of the city council of Wolfsburg , most recently as head of the finance, culture and education department. He resigned his position as city treasurer under Lord Mayor Rolf Schnellecke after three months in order to return to the German Schaustellerbund. From May 2008 he was again General Manager there. Mayor's office

Helmut Gels applied for the mayor's office as early as 2005, but was unable to prevail within the CDU in advance against his party friend Josef Kläne. For the mayoral election in Vechta on September 11, 2011, Helmut Gels ran against the SPD candidate Hubert Wolking. Gels won the election with 58.03 percent of the valid votes and a voter turnout of 53.10 percent. He replaced Lower Saxony's former Agriculture Minister Uwe Bartels , who had won the mayoral election in 2005 and became the city's first SPD mayor. In 2011, Bartels could no longer run for reasons of age. Also for reasons of age, Gels did not run for the 2019 mayoral election in Vechta. His successor there was Kristian Kater (SPD).

During his time as city director Vechtas, Helmut Gels was involved in the Lower Saxony City Council as a member of the executive committee, chairman of the Oldenburg district conference and the working group in rural areas, as well as deputy chairman of the legal and constitutional committee. As mayor, he is the deputy of Meppen's mayor Jan Erik Bohling in the Presidium of the Lower Saxony City Council . In the German Association of Cities he was a member of the sports committee.

At the University of Vechta he was a member of the university council and in the 2005/06 carnival season he was president of the Vechta honor guild carnival club. He is the deputy chairman of the Vechta Art Association Kaponier. In the Lower Saxony Municipal Political Association , a sub-organization of the CDU, he has been a member of the finance working group since 1999.

Helmut Gels was elected President of the DRK Regional Association Oldenburg on June 3, 2020 in Oldenburg (Oldb) .
