Kronberger Hof
The Kronberger Hof is a former aristocratic court in Geisenheim in the Rheingau that was built in the second half of the 16th century . A remaining listed building has been part of the St. Ursula School since 1894, along with a garden pavilion that has also been preserved .
history
As Hof von der Leyen , the courtyard was built in 1581 instead of 13 bourgeois houses for Hans Andreas von der Leyen. In 1616 the Archbishop of Mainz and Elector Johann Schweikhard von Cronberg acquired the farm, which was now called the Cronberger Hof . The property included various buildings, gardens, vineyards, fields and meadows that were cultivated by courtiers and tenants.
After many owners changed, including the Brömser family from Rüdesheim for a time, the estate came into the possession of the Ostein family in 1732 with Johann Franz Heinrich Carl Graf von Ostein . Under Karl Maximilian von Ostein , parts of the garden area were used to build the Palais Ostein . In 1801 Franz Georg Karl von Metternich , the father of the Austrian State Chancellor Metternich, acquired the estate. In the event of further changes of ownership, the building and garden were separated from the rest of the property. In 1893 the Ursuline Order was finally able to acquire the building and garden from the Berlin wine merchant Andrew Thorndyke and on April 4, 1894 open a new monastery with a girls' college and boarding school. In 1899 the originally symmetrical building was extended to the east by three axes . In 1964 three axes to the west were demolished for the construction of a new school building.
description
The Kronberger Hof is a three-story stone building with a gable roof and a stair tower in front. Of the two Renaissance portals, the one marked with the year 1581 was probably originally at the back of the house. Above the portal marked 1616 is a cartouche with the coat of arms of the Metternich family from more recent times. The garden pavilion, built around 1720/30, has a remarkable stucco ceiling, which is assigned to the school of the Ticino plasterer Carlo Maria Pozzi . The pavilion has served as the entrance to a new sports hall since 1995.
