The Kronozkaja ( Russian Кроноцкая ) is a 40 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean on the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka .

River course

The Kronotskaya forms the outflow of the 372  m high Kronotskoye Lake . It flows in a south-easterly direction towards the sea. The river is flanked by the volcanic cones Kronozkaja Sopka ( 3527  m ) in the northeast and Krasheninnikow ( 1856  m ) in the southwest. Shortly before reaching the sea, the river turns sharply to the northeast. It flows another 6 km along the coast, separated by a narrow headland, before it actually flows into the sea. The catchment area of the Kronotskaja covers 2980 km².

Fish fauna

The course of the river is located within the Kronotsky nature reserve . Every year numerous migratory fish swim up the river from the sea to their spawning grounds . These counts pink salmon , the chum salmon , the sockeye and coho salmon . There are other salmonids in the river system, including Salvelinus albus , Salvelinus kronocius , Salvelinus leucomaenis and Salvelinus schmidti .

Hydropower projects

There are plans to build two hydropower plants with outputs of 210 and 90 MW respectively on the Kronotskaya river.
