The Krotensee (also known as Krottensee ) is located in the Salzkammergut near Sankt Gilgen in the Austrian state of Salzburg .
Location and landscape
The Krotensee is located at the foot of the Schafberg between Wolfgang and Mondsee , south of the Scharflinger Höhe , the pass between the two lakes. Schloss Hüttenstein is located directly on the shore , and the B 154 Mondsee Straße passes the lake directly.
The Krotensee is drained by the Krotenseebach , which flows into the Wolfgangsee to the southwest in Brunnwinkl . Its main tributaries are the Zeppezauerbach , which flows in from the Almkogel via the Schmalnau from the northwest, and the Kesselbach , which comes from the east via Pucha from the Schafberg.
Geology and hydrology
The lake is about 46 m deep.
The Scharflinger Höhe was overflowed in Hochwürm by ice from the Wolfgangsee branch of the Traungletscher . In the preboreal , Meromixis probably started in the Krotensee , possibly with individual interruptions.
History and use
The Krotensee and Schloss Hüttenstein are owned by a private foundation; any use is prohibited. Diving permits may be issued in the castle.
Around the Krotensee there is a legend of a sunken cart, whose wine barrels reappeared in the Danube without the carter and without the horses. Divers found, for example, a complete castle kitchen in the lake, which has apparently served as a garbage dump for the castle owners for centuries.
