Kruis ( Russian Круиз , wiss. Transliteration Kruiz ) is a Russian heavy metal band. They were the first metal band from the former USSR to gain international fame.

Band history

The Russian musician and producer Matwei Anitschkin founded a vocal and instrumental ensemble called Molodyje golossa ( Молодые голоса ; Russian for young voices ) in 1974 . He regularly invited musicians to this project and thus met the young guitarist Valeri Gaina in 1978. In 1980 he and Gaina decided to start a new music project. Unlike Molodyje golossa , it was supposed to be a rock band, and with the addition of other musicians from this project and from the music group Magistral , the first line- up of Kruis was completed.

Shortly after it was founded, the band recorded their first album, "Krutitsja woltschok", which only contained songs they had written themselves. This was unusual at the time because it was common practice in the Soviet Union for rock bands to interpret pieces written by state-controlled composers and lyricists. Like the following releases, the album was not released through a state record label and was therefore mainly distributed through tape trading . Thus, the musicians could not earn any money selling records and were dependent on live performances. As professional musicians, they were considered government employees and had to come to terms with those officially responsible so that they could go on tour unhindered , but in return had to adapt politically to the ruling system. During the Andropov era from 1983 onwards, the band were banned from any live activities, which is why they moved to the Ukraine in 1984 and gave 128 concerts there in just 45 days in order to earn money again.

With the political change under Gorbachev from 1985 onwards, the band were again granted full freedom and the musicians became top earners. Co-founder Gaina became the head of the band after singer Monin had to leave the band, and stylistically turned to speed and thrash metal . Kruis played in large stadiums and in 1986 was able to release their first official record Kruis-1 through the state-owned record label Melodia , which sold around 12 million times in Russia. The first shows outside Russia followed in Norway, Spain and in 1987 a sold out tour through Bulgaria. Furthermore occurred Kruis as the opening act on the Russia-tours by Metallica and Slayer on. Due to the success of the record industry became aware of the band and so they signed a record deal with the major label WEA and released the English-language album Kruiz in 1988 . But due to restructuring at WEA, the band lost the record deal. The musicians returned to Moscow from Munich in 1989, disappointed, and disbanded the band in 1990. The second English-language album Culture Shock ALS , recorded before the contract was terminated , was only released in 2008 by the Russian label CD-Maximum.

In 1994 the former singer Monin re-formed the band, but without Gaina, who had meanwhile turned to other projects. The band turned to hard rock , which was influenced by bands like the early Scorpions , and released a studio album in 1997 and 2001. Although they regained a fan base relatively quickly in Russia, they were no longer able to build on the international success of the late 1980s.

Singer Monin died on August 27, 2010 in Moscow.
