Krzysztof Michalski
Krzysztof Michalski (born June 8, 1948 in Warsaw ; † February 11, 2013 in Vienna ) was a Polish philosopher and rector of the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, which he founded in 1982 .
Life
Krzysztof Michalski graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in philosophy in 1974 with a dissertation on Heidegger and contemporary philosophy . In 1977 he spent a year as a Humboldt Fellow in Cologne, and from 1978 he taught philosophy at Warsaw University. 1981/82 he received a scholarship from the Thyssen Foundation in Heidelberg and 1982/83 Fellow of Churchill College , Cambridge. In 1986 he completed his habilitation at the University of Warsaw with the thesis Logic and Time. Attempt a phenomenological analysis . From 1987 he taught philosophy at Boston University , and since 1994 also at Warsaw University.
In 1982 he founded the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, of which he was rector until his death. The institute is an independent institute for advanced study in the field of humanities and social sciences. Since its inception, it has promoted intellectual exchange between East and West, between science and society, and between a variety of disciplines and schools of thought.
In the run-up to EU enlargement, Michalski advised the European Commission several times, most recently as chairman of the reflection group The Spiritual and Cultural Dimension of Europe (2002-04). He was Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Public Affairs in Warsaw and President of the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study (NetIAS).
