The Kugruk River is an approximately 120 km long tributary of the Chukchi Sea in the northeast of the Seward Peninsula in Alaska .
The Kugruk River forms the drain of Imuruk Lake . He leaves the 311 m high lake on its southeastern shore. It initially flows in a northeastern direction. It meets the mountain range that separates it from the Kiwalik River system further to the east , and turns north. It later turns west, picks up the Burnt River from the left, and gradually turns north. The Kugruk River finally flows into the head end of the 4 km long Kugruk lagoon , which opens north to Kotzebue Sound . In the middle section, the river shows a strongly meandering behavior.
The river got its name from the US Geological Survey (USGS) in 1899 . Since another river in the area had the same name, this was later renamed the Kougarok River to distinguish it .
