The Chelmno street in Berlin's district of Schöneberg runs between the Alvenslebenstraße and Großgörschenstraße and empties into the New Chelmno road . In the 1970s and 1980s it was a meeting place for the homosexual scene.

It was named on November 27, 1864 after the Bohemian town of Kulm near Aussig , where the Battle of Kulm took place on August 30, 1813 during the Wars of Liberation . Until the 1920s it was written on Culmstrasse . Originally it was laid out as Straße 20 by Section III of the Berliner Bankverein.

The short street is best known for its homosexual infrastructure in the 1970s and 1980s. After moving out of Dennewitzstrasse in April 1974, the Homosexual Aktion Westberlin (HAW e.V.) settled at number 20a. In 1977 the HAW opened the SchwuZ gay center in the same building , which was located there until the move to Hasenheide in January 1987 . Then, among other things, the gay counseling and then temporarily the editing of the Victory Column was in the building. Until the summer of 2010, the flipflop pub was located in the front building . At number 20a, third backyard, four flights of stairs up, the producer's gallery Galerie Kulmer Straße opened in 1978 with students of Wolfgang Petrick , one of the first self-help galleries in Berlin, which had a predecessor with Großgörschen 35 .

Today you can find lesbian counseling here and, since 2010, the O-TonArt theater, founded by the full playback theater troupe O-TonPiraten, and the association Art aller Art e. V.

The Café Savarin , which is also located there, has had a great reputation for decades and has reopened since autumn 2013 after several changes of operator and a temporary closure.
