The Cultural Foundation of German Displaced Persons sees itself as a supraregional cultural institution for all displaced persons . Since it was founded in 1974, it has taken on the task of keeping the diverse cultural heritage of the historical German east and settlement areas alive in the consciousness of Germans and those abroad and of promoting the cultural creation in its tradition. Initially, the cultural foundation's sphere of activity was essentially limited to the Federal Republic of Germany , but the political change made it possible to reach the Germans in the new federal states and in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, as well as to facilitate dialogue with the eastern neighbors intensify.

The cultural foundation analyzes the status and development of the relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the states of Eastern Europe and offers the displaced persons and the public appropriate information. In conjunction with university professors from Germany and the East, she conducts research projects and specialist conferences in the fields of constitutional and international law, history, literature and art history. In all measures, she involves young scientists as project participants, speakers and conference participants as well as multipliers. The results of this work and events would be published as monographs and edited volumes.
