Kumagai Ichiya ( Japanese 熊 谷 一 彌 , modern : 熊 谷 一 弥 ; * September 10, 1890 in Ōmuta , Fukuoka Prefecture , Japan ; † August 16, 1968 ibid), in English often as Ichiya Kumagae , was a Japanese tennis player .

From 1910 he studied at the Keiō University and joined the tennis club. First he played soft tennis until he switched to real tennis in 1913. In 1914 he was runner-up in singles at the Manila championship, in 1915 at the Asian championship in singles and runner-up in doubles, and in singles and doubles at the 2nd Far East championship. In 1916 he graduated from university and went to the USA to study tennis. In 1917 he joined the Mitsubishi company , was again champion at the 3rd Far East championship in singles and doubles and was transferred to New York. From then on he took part in US championships, where he was 7th in the respective annual lists in 1918, 3rd in 1919, 5th in 1920 and 7th in 1921.

Kumagai Ichiya won the silver medal in doubles at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp with his compatriot Kashio Seiichirō . In the final they were defeated by the British Oswald Turnbull and Max Woosnam in four sets with 2: 6, 7: 5, 5: 7 and 5: 7. In the individual, Kumagai also won the silver medal after losing to the later Olympic champion Louis Raymond in four sets with 7: 5, 4: 6, 5: 7 and 4: 6. Kumagai Ichiya won the only tennis medals in the history of the Olympic Games for Japan.

Furthermore, Kumagai was the first Japanese to reach the semifinals of the US tennis championships (now the US Open ) in 1918 and was also Japan's first Davis Cup captain. He led his team to the final in 1921, but lost to the United States 5-0. The Japanese established tennis in his home country with Shimizu Zenzō .
