Kumba M'bye , known by her stage name Kumba , (born February 5, 1983 in Serekunda ) is a Gambian - Swedish singer and rapper and former model .

Life

M'bye is the daughter of Gambian parents and was born in Serekunda, she grew up in Malmö and Landskrona, Sweden (according to another source, her father is Swedish).

In 2005, M'bye became one of Sweden's nine candidates in the first season of Top Model, the Scandinavian version of America's Next Top Model . After a candidate had to leave the competition, she ended up in 6th place. After that, she worked as a model for a few years.

In the early 2000s she began rapping and writing texts in English. In the summer of 2013, the rapper Stor heard her rap and invited her to audition for the record company Redline Records. Inspired by the rappers Linda Pira and Lilla Namo , she began to write texts in Swedish.

In 2014 she worked with Pira on her music single " Knäpper mina fingrar ". This resulted in Kumba being able to attend a hip hop concert only for female rappers in the dramatics . She also took part in the radio show “ En kärleksattack på svensk hiphop ” on Sveriges Radio . In 2014 her music single " I staden " was released for Redline Records . At the Kingsize Gala 2015 she was nominated for the best newcomer of 2015.

In 2015, Kumba took part in the TV show Lyckliga gatan , the Swedish version of Sing my song - The Swap Concert which was broadcast on TV4 , where she performed a new version of the Kikki Danielsson song " Bra vibrationer ", while Danielsson performed a new version of the Kumba - interpreted the song "I staden". In 2016 she released the song Mentally , an Afrobeat song that was created in collaboration with three Afro-Swedish rappers with Gambian roots. There she acknowledges her Gambian roots and says she would like to pass on the Gambian culture to her children.
