history

The "official resolution photo" of the deadly Doris was taken in 1987 in Kumpelnest 3000

The Kumpelnest 3000 was created on May 1st, 1987 by Mark Ernestus , Meisterschüler u. a. under Wolfgang Ramsbott , opened as a thesis at the then Hochschule der Künste . The idea was that of a readymade bar: Ernestus took over the brothel Club Maitresse at Lützowstraße 23 and opened it as Kumpelnest 3000 without major renovations in the midst of the serious unrest of May 1st, 1987 . The name goes back to the French-Canadian David Steeves, who saw two drunks arm in arm come out of an erotic bar and asked if there was a buddy there.

Although the audience dined not only with numerous gay and lesbian guests but also from the Berlin punk and post-punk subculture, the musical program ranged from pop to industrial . Ernestus said: “It didn't matter what was played. It was important that it didn't matter ”. Many guests came from the extended circle of the art band Die Tödliche Doris , which also celebrated its dissolution here in 1987. In addition, the pub became a meeting place for a larger group of deaf people. Countless prominent guests also frequented here, such as Kate Moss , Jean Baudrillard , Gitte , Alfred Biolek , Heiner Müller , Anne Will , Tom Kummer , Harald Fricke and Patrick Lindner . In the middle of the company, Karl Lagerfeld organized a photoshoot with Claudia Schiffer .

Ernestus founded the record store Hard Wax from the proceeds of Kumpelnest 3000 in 1989 and later became part of the legendary techno duo Basic Channel . The Kumpelnest was taken over by Kai Kämmerer in 1999, but has remained largely unchanged to the present day.
