Kunnandarkoil or Kunnandarkovil is a village with around 650 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . On the outskirts there is an early medieval cave temple from the Pallava period , to which several buildings were added in later times.

location

Kunnandarkoil is located approx. 34 km (driving distance) north of the district capital Pudukkottai or approx. 40 km southeast of Tiruchirappalli at an altitude of approx. 105 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is warm to hot; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months from July to December.

population

The vast majority of the almost exclusively Tamil- speaking residents of the place are Hindus ; other religions hardly play a role in the rural regions of India. The female share of the population is around 10% higher than the male.

economy

Agriculture and, to a lesser extent, cattle breeding (cows, chickens) form the livelihood of the population. Small traders, craftsmen and day laborers also live in the village.

history

How far the history of the place goes back is unclear despite numerous inscriptions; in the 8th century, d. H. When the cave temple was built , it was located in the border area between the Pallava Empire in the north and the Pandya Empire in the south. Under the rule of the Chola , i.e. from the 9th to the 12th century, further buildings were built; Some small temples date from the Vijayanagar period (mid-14th to 16th century).

Attractions

  • The cave temple , dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva , is located on a 10 to 15 m high granite rock on the outskirts and corresponds to the three-portal scheme of the early Pallava architecture with its block-like pillars above and below, but octagonal in the middle. It has two small transverse vestibules ( mandapas ), the sides of which are decorated with figure reliefs. The cella ( garbhagriha ), guarded by two approximately life-size side guard figures ( dvarapalas ), is elevated; in it is a lingam made of dark granite.
  • In front of the rock temple is a large, flat-roofed vestibule with nearly 90 decorative columns, the architectural style of which may date from the Chola period or from the early Vijayanagar period. It appears to be resting on a horse-drawn temple wagon ( ratha ), the base area of which is adorned with 8 dwarfish, pot-bellied figures ( ganas ) in the area of the staircase .
  • On the granite rock, on an approximately 1 m high base substructure, rises an outdoor temple of the Chola period , dedicated to the god Skanda , Shiva's son, (also called Murugan or Subrahmanya ) with a small closed vestibule and only little structured outer walls. In the roof corners of the slightly larger cella there are four peacocks, the pack animals of Scandas. The tower structure does not correspond to the stepped-pyramidal scheme of the Chola architecture, but rather a pseudo-building with a "domed dome".
