Kuno Slate (1984)

Kuno Schiefer (born May 25, 1948 in Stuttgart , † May 15, 1992 in São José dos Campos ) was a German painter and graphic artist. His oeuvre includes paintings, drawings and graphics. The works from his time in Brazil are shaped by the Brazilian landscape.

One of the most famous works by Kuno Schiefer is the painting Bunt (1987). It's a great abstract take on the Brazilian flora.

Life

Born in Stuttgart, he spent his childhood there. He came to Brazil in 1963 at the age of 14 and has since lived with his family in São José dos Campos, a city between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where they settled in the countryside near the city. From 1964 to 1968 he attended the Escola de Belas Artes de São José dos Campos .

As an artist, too, his beginning was different from that of most young Brazilian artists. It is the custom in the country for young artists to submit their work to competitions and tenders, where a jury makes a selection. These take place annually in different Brazilian states. The process that an artist goes through until he is accepted by the art market was a short stage for him. He owed his discovery and promotion to a. the painter Victor Arruda . His work was soon shown in galleries in São Paulo and Rio der Janeiro and has been exhibited regularly since 1971. From 1985 he lived alternately in Berlin and Brazil.

He died at the age of 53 in São José dos Campos.

The first pictures by Kuno Schiefer show enlarged sections of reality in bright, bright colors. Utensils, a corner of the dining room, furniture or utensils got a new narrative expressiveness through the different scale. Objects of everyday life were later replaced by gardens and his landscapes eventually developed into sections of leaves and flowers in the foreground. Back then, after Kuno Schiefer had remained loyal to this painting for a long time, he decided to divide his working periods between Europe and Brazil.

Typical subjects of his painting were initially flowers and vegetative forms in intense colors. Exactly at the moment of reflecting on his painting, when he decided to look for another place in Europe, the chance encounter with the artist Brigitte Heimann (* 1946) brought him to Berlin, who had her studio there in the courts of law . It took a few more months to make a definitive decision before Kuno Schiefer finally decided in favor of Berlin. This change in his rhythm of life is reflected in his work in a subjective way. In Berlin, Schiefer had the opportunity to see more painting and to think about lighting conditions and work rhythms. The change in latitude enriched the composition of his new pictures and increased his experience of intensity and color application. This disciplined activity with alternating periods between Berlin and Brazil meant a great leap in quality. His work acquired an introspective character, his pictures a musical rhythm, and the relationship to nature has become subjective. Schiefer freed itself from narrative figuration.

But now, in the current debate in Berlin - with the matter, the quality of the painting, the transparency of the brushstrokes in the overpaintings and, on the other hand, with the experience of the diversity of light and colors of Brazil, new points of reference are emerging.

The three fixed points of his production and living space with Rio de Janeiro, São Jose dos Campos and Berlin determined Schiefer's color selection. Although the work situations in the different cities are completely different, he has managed to create a harmonious color palette with its own identity. In addition to the conventional painting techniques, he also used acrylic paints in the airbrush technique, which give his pictures a hyper-realistic impression. For the album O Canto da Amazônia by Wladimir Henrique he created the cover using one of his images.
