Kunsthaus Apolda

The Kunsthaus Apolda is an art house in the central Thuringian district town of Apolda . It was founded on June 12, 1995 by the association "Apolda Avantgarde ".

History of the building

In 1871/72 the manufacturer Robert Francke, co-owner of the woolen factory "Spoer und Francke", had a two-storey villa built in the Italian country house style. The villa remained in the possession of the Spoer family for almost three decades. After that the owners changed a few times and from 1933 the house was partially rented out. Between 1952 and 1994 various district administration facilities were located there. In 1961 the property was acquired by the district council. From 1992 the district's exhibitions took place in the house in cooperation with the newly founded art association “Apolda Avantgarde”. After the district administration moved out, the district council decided on January 11, 1995 to renovate the art exhibition in the district and district town. The building was renovated and has been the seat of the art association ever since. The villa is a listed building .

Exhibition history

The first major exhibition, dedicated to the painters Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth on June 18, 1995, attracted national attention with 8,000 visitors. The Dalí exhibition, the first of its kind, attracted over 16,000 visitors. In 2005, exhibitions with works by the artists Aristide Maillol and Karl Lagerfeld , in 2006 Picasso's women, Cocteau's men and works by Johannes Grützke and Camille Claudel were very popular. In addition, art lectures and auctions as well as vernissages take place regularly .

The current exhibitions show u. a. Leo Putz , painter of the artist group Brücke , Gerd Mackensen or Max Klinger and, for the first time in the new federal states, photographs by Helmut Newton and Willy Bogner . In 2011 the Kunsthaus presented the exhibition Wanderlust und Sinnesfreude with works by Corinth, Liebermann and Max Slevogt .

The Kunsthaus Apolda has collections , including the “Bunte Collection - Positions of Classical Modernism”.

The Kunsthaus has been headed by Klaus-Dieter Böhm since 2011.
