Kurban is a Turkish rock band from Istanbul, which existed from 1995 to 2005 and has been active again since December 31, 2006. So far the band has released four albums. The fourth ( Sahip ) was published on March 22, 2010.

history

Kurban was founded in 1995 under the name Outside and initially only played songs in English. In 1997 the band name was changed to Kurban , with which the final change to Turkish took place.

In March 1999 the band released their first album of the same name, Kurban. In the same year Kurban appeared as the opening act for Metallica at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium . Then Umut Gökçen, who emigrated to the USA , was replaced by the new guitarist Özgür Kankaynar in August 2000. The albums Sert (2004) and Insanlar (2005) followed.

Kurban had the last big appearance in 2005 at the RockIstanbul as opening act for Megadeth . Due to the excessive pressure on singer Deniz Yılmaz and the fact that the last album Insanlar only sold around 25,000 copies in the first month, the band split up in June 2005. While Deniz Yılmaz joined the group Panik , the drummer Burak Gürpınar joined the popular rock band Athena . The band leader and bassist Kerem Tüzün started a collaboration with Demir Demirkan that continued after the reunification of Kurban. In 2006 the album Kurban was voted number four of the "30 best albums in the history of Turkish rock" by Blue Jean magazine .

On December 30, 2006, the band announced their reunion for the next day. After just four weeks, the band started giving concerts. But the tour, which started in early 2007, was interrupted for about 15 months from February 25, because Deniz Yılmaz had to do his military service. After his return, the concerts continued.

In September 2009 the band announced their new album called Sahip , but the time frame could not be met. After a song ( Soykıran ) from the new album was published on the official website as a New Year's surprise for the fans on January 1, 2010 at 00:00 , and another song ( Ifrit ) on the Turkish radio station Radyo-D on March 20, 2010 was introduced, the new album Sahip was finally released on March 20, 2010 in Istanbul after a long introductory phase .

The name Kurban

"Kurban" is Turkish and means "sacrifice / offering". The idea for this came from the singer of the band, Deniz Yılmaz. When asked how he got the name, he answered in an interview in the magazine heygirl (1999): “İlk başta biz bu pop piyasasında kesin kurban oluruz [...] diye düşünüyorduk. [...] Bir de yakınlık ifadesi zaten, kardeş anlamına da geliyor. [...] ” Translation: “ At the beginning we thought we would fall victim to the pop market. Besides, it's an expression of affection, somehow also means buddy (coll.). "

As a reference to the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice (Turkish: Kurban Bayramı), the image of a sheep adorns the covers of the first two albums Kurban and Sert.
