Kurt-Hermann Kühn (born September 20, 1926 in Merseburg , † October 14, 1989 in Berlin-Buch ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Kühn was born as the son of the trade unionist, politician and journalist Kurt Kühn . From 1946 to 1952 Kühn studied at the Academy for Graphics and Book Printing in Leipzig with Elisabeth Voigt and Max Schwimmer , and in Berlin at the University of Fine and Applied Arts with Horst Strempel .

While studying in Leipzig, Kühn met his wife Marianne Kühn-Berger (1927–2016), who later became an artist herself. Together they chose the state of Brandenburg as the center of their lives, initially living in Kleinmachnow and later in Wilhelmshorst near Potsdam.

From 1953 to 1970 Kühn was a lecturer at the Berlin School of Advertising and Design . Thereafter Kühn worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist until his death in 1989. During this time he was also honorary chairman of the Potsdam district association of visual artists (VBK) for 22 years.

In addition to an extensive painting and graphic work, he created many large-format murals - mainly frescoes. His portraits of women and erotic drawings also attracted a lot of attention. Work and study trips took him regularly abroad. a. to Syria and Egypt. These travel experiences and encounters are processed in many of his works.

Controversy

The closeness of Kühn to the ideology of the GDR was repeatedly criticized. Civil rights activist Bob Bahra criticized the reassembly of the mural “Heirs of Spartacus” in the Potsdam City and State Library as a “scandal”. Since 1968 " Social Security Employees " (GMS) of the State Security had been bold. The city of Potsdam made it clear that the picture is a testimony to contemporary history and as such is a listed building.
