Kurt Baumgarte

Kurt Baumgarte (born April 22, 1912 in Hanover ; † July 21, 2006 ibid) was a German graphic artist, KPD politician and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

After attending primary school , Baumgarte became a commercial artist and attended the Hanover School of Applied Arts between 1928 and 1930 . From 1926 Baumgarte was organized in the Communist Youth Association of Germany and was a district official. In 1930 he became a member of the KPD. From 1933 to 1934 he stayed in the Soviet Union and attended the international Lenin School in Moscow . From 1934 to 1935 he worked illegally against the National Socialist regime in Hamburg and northern Germany and was arrested in Berlin in February 1935 as a result . Baumgarte was taken to the Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel concentration camp , and in 1936 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Berlin People's Court . On May 7, 1945 Baumgarte was liberated from Waldheim prison by the Allies .

After the end of the Second World War he worked as a secretary in building up the party work of the KPD in Hanover and the surrounding area. Between August 23, 1946 and January 29, 1946 he was a member of the appointed Hanover state parliament and deputy chairman of the KPD parliamentary group.

The district court of Lüneburg sentenced Baumgarte on March 13, 1966 for continuing to work in the banned KPD and for "ringleadership, secret bundling with unconstitutional intent" to a prison sentence of one year and ten months and three years of denial of public office and eligibility.

In 1968 he joined the DKP and was active in the central arbitration commission for several years.

He was born with Emmy Baumgarte. Schaper married. His brother August Baumgarte was also a resistance fighter.
