Kurt Heilbut
Kurt Heilbut (born December 21, 1888 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † April 30, 1943 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a German writer and editor .
Life
Heilbut was of Jewish descent and belonged to the SPD . In 1919 he became party secretary in Berlin , in 1920 he stayed in Sonneberg , where his son Peter Heilbut , who became a music teacher, composer and pianist after the Second World War, was born. In 1921 Kurt Heilbut went to Dresden and became editor of the Dresdner Volkszeitung, which was published until 1933 .
As a writer, he gained notoriety primarily through his multiple published work Solstice .
On March 8, 1933, SA men surrounded Kurt Heilbut's house at Südstrasse 11 in Freital (today Südstrasse 20) and broke the windows. In the following years Kurt Heilbut was imprisoned several times. He died in the Auschwitz concentration camp .
Honors
A memorial plaque for Kurt Heilbut was placed on his house in Freital in 1996 and a street in the Zauckerode district was named after him.
