Kurt Lucas (born September 1, 1905 in Berlin , † December 25, 1986 in East Berlin ) was a German resistance fighter against National Socialism and a trade union official ( FDGB ). He was chairman of the Transport Industry Union and the Railway Industry Union.

Life

Lucas, the son of a cook, learned the trade of a grinder after attending primary school . He was unionized from 1920 and joined the Communist Youth Association of Germany in 1921 and the Communist Party of Germany in 1925 . He held various union and party functions.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists, Lucas took part in the resistance . In March 1933 he was arrested and taken to the Sonnenburg concentration camp . After his release, he was placed under police supervision and again illegally operated. After being drafted into the Wehrmacht , he went over to the Czechoslovak partisans .

After his return to Germany, Lucas initially found a job as a functionary in the railway industrial union founded in 1946, of which he was temporarily vice-chairman until November 1950. He was also accepted into the SED as a former KPD member. At the 3rd FDGB Congress in late August / early September 1950 he was elected as a member of the FDGB Federal Executive. After the Volkskammer elections in October 1950 and the ensuing formation of a government, the FDGB Federal Executive Committee proposed Lucas as State Secretary for the Ministry of Transport at a meeting in November 1950 in order to exert stronger union influence on the GDR government. Ultimately, this was not complied with, and Ernst Wollweber and Erich Wächter became State Secretaries . However, Lucas was hired as the chief division manager in the Ministry of Transport. In 1952, Lucas was delegated to study at the Friedrich Engels district school in Berlin. He then replaced Otto Seeger as chairman of the central board of IG Eisenbahn in February 1954 . Because of this function, Lucas was nominated and also elected as a candidate by the FDGB for the election to the 2nd People's Chamber in October 1954. In February 1955, however, his functions in the trade union and in the GDR parliament were withdrawn "because of damage to the reputation of the trade unions". Karl Fritsche succeeded him as chairman of the central board of IG Eisenbahn, and Lucas also lost his membership in the FDGB federal board. On May 20, 1955, he had to resign his mandate in the People's Chamber, successor was Leokardia Lehmann. Between 1955 and 1970, Lucas worked in social security administration. Lucas last lived in Berlin-Weißensee and died at the age of 81.
