Erich Wächter (born August 26, 1908 in Essen , † April 10, 1971 in Berlin ) was a German politician and CDU official in the GDR .

Life

The worker's son attended secondary school from 1918 to 1924 and then attended commercial college for a year. Then he completed a two-year traineeship as a field and industrial railroader in Essen until 1927 . From 1927 to 1944 he worked as an industrial and commercial clerk at Deutsche Lufthansa in Essen and Berlin. In 1944 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and in 1945 he was taken prisoner of war .

In 1945 he joined the CDU in the Soviet occupation zone . From 1946 to 1947 he was district councilor for economics and deputy district administrator of the Hagenow district . In 1950 he was the district administrator of the Usedom district .

From March 1950 he was Minister for Construction and Transport in the state of Mecklenburg and from November 1950 to 1953 State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport of the GDR (successor to Wilhelm Bachem ). In 1953 he became president of the GDR Chamber of Commerce and Industry . From 1950 to 1958 he was a member of the People's Chamber .

Erich Wächter was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in 1955 and in silver in 1959. From March of the same year until 1968 he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Trade and Internal German Trade. He then worked as a trade councilor in Bulgaria from 1968 to 1971 . In 1968 he received the Order of Labor Banner .

From 1950 to 1958 he was a member of the main board and the presidium of the CDU and chairman of the revision commission.
